The inception came from the sketchbook. This was me observing and drawing what I saw from satellite images on the computer screen. Simply, this is my inital assesment and ideations.

The bulk of the process was looking a the satellite imagery of Medicine Hat, courtesy of Apple Maps and Google Earth. It was as simple as just tracing what I saw. Meanwhile, I could see typeface everywhere! I just had to look hard and think outside the box. For instance, a few roads from above turn out to look like a lowercase “e”. Equally an airport landing strip can resemble a lower case “l” and in it’s full arrangement can resemble an “x”.
Really just dissecting the satellite imagery in other words.

I created a typeface based on the roadways, grid and neighborhood blocks of Medicine Hat, Alberta through satellite imagery. I fervently observed, saw the patterns of letters and traced and it birthed this examplar of a vernacular typeface.
